When summer starts to come to an end, some routine maintenance can make your outdoor furniture last for many future summers.

It doesn’t matter whether your patio furniture is expensive or not; just a few simple steps before putting it in storage for the winter can make all the difference.

Ideally, it’s best to store any type of patio furniture — metal, plastic or wood — indoors if you’re in a harsh winter zone. If that’s not possible, you can buy weatherproof covers, or make your own plastic covers with tie-downs to keep them in place. There are many sizes and shapes to choose from.

You should also cover firepits, heaters, grills, outdoor lights and other accessory patio items.

Cushions

Again, inside storage is best. However, if space is a problem, consider buying air-tight zipper bags, and storing them perhaps in a garage or shed.

Most importantly, before you store anything (especially cushions), CLEAN THEM! They are less likely to develop any mold or mildew if all the debris and dirt that causes these on cushion fabrics, is removed before storage. In fact, regular cleaning is highly recommended. The frequency depends on your environment. If you have a lot of trees in the area, pollen infiltrates the cushion fibers and is a great source of food for molds. Dusty areas too, cause problems. Monthly cleaning is recommended.

Before cleaning, always check the manufacturer’s directions before using any cleaning products. For most materials, however, you’ll just need soap and water. You can also use a pressure washer on a very low setting to speed up the cleaning job, but be very careful, as too much pressure could severely damage the fabric or the cushion stuffing.

For acrylic cushions, spot cleaning with a sponge, mild soap and water is probably all you need to do. It is essential to make sure the cushions are completely dry before storing them.

You can also use a solution of up to 1 cup of bleach and 2 cups of detergent in a gallon of water to clean cushions. Just spray it on, allow it to soak for 30 minutes, then lightly scrub with a sponge or rag, or even a soft-bristle brush.

Furniture Frames

Check your manufacturer’s directions or website for details on what maintenance your outdoor furniture frames require. You can also find tutorials at sites such as YouTube.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make with outdoor furniture is throwing it out instead of making simple repairs with parts either covered under warranty, or available online or at patio furniture stores. However, if you’re in the market for a new patio set, consider in advance what maintenance it will require.

Inspect it to ensure there aren’t big gaps in joints that would allow water to warp wooden, or rust metal pieces, and that the hardware is capped to keep out moisture. Try out the cushions to see if they fit snugly and are comfortable

Check that the seat height feels right for the table; that armrests aren’t too high to pull chairs close; and that there’s plenty of leg room without feet getting caught up in the table base.

Maintaining a patio set properly can save you from having to buy another one for years to come.

Relaxing on a deck, patio or balcony, and entertaining friends outdoors is often the highlight of summer.
