Decorist.com shares eight steps to revitalize your sidewalk and patios and show off your DIY skills.
- The first step is making decorative slots or ridges. You can use a guide to make them approximately 2×4. This grid works well with natural colored concrete.
- Step Two is to take a stiff broom, brush and lots of energy and really clean. Washing and rinsing several times can make a lot of difference in the appearance immediately. If it’s really dirty you may need to use a power washer.
- Step Three is a coat of color. A pump sprayer is the best option. Apply your first coat of outdoor concrete stain evenly in a consistently circular motion to make sure that the top surface is completely covered. You should apply the stain while the concrete is wet.
- The next step is done before your first coat is dry. You should begin to apply a second coat of concrete stain. Don’t worry if you miss a spot as it will create a cool marbleized effect on the concrete.
- Step five they call Swish and Swirl. By gently spraying water from your hose you can use the spray to mix the two stains until they start blending and marbleizing. The water can be used to help form patterns in the concrete. This is great for a stamped concrete floor.
- Step Six: When the floor is dry check for areas that have not been covered or lack vibrancy, color or stain. By spraying your stain on a dry cloth you can dab necessary areas to get the desired effect. Once this is completed allow 24 hours to dry.
- Step Seven: To prevent any fading you should take time to seal your concrete surface. Apply the sealer with a dry roller. They recommend reapplying sealer each 3-5 years to ensure ultimate potential of your patio or walkway.
- For the final and best step its time to get the grill on your new surface, invite your family and friends, fire up the grill and enjoy your newly created outdoor space. With a cooler and iced drinks and a couple of lawn chairs you and your buddies can now enjoy this DIY project.
