How to Measure Your Cushions for Replacement

Your outdoor cushions have given you years of service, but now they're old, mildewed, torn or just not salvageable by cleaning. Don't throw your patio cushions out just yet! Here's how to measure them so you can order your brand new cushions to be the same size.

Cushion Measurements

  1. Lay the cushion down on a flat surface.
  2. Measure the width of the cushion from one side to another.
  3. Measure the complete length of the cushion from the top to the bottom.
  4. Measure from the top of the cushion to the hinge (where the back part meets the seat part).
  5. Finally, measure the thickness. Bear in mind that after many years of use, some cushions tend to flatten out. Generally, wrought iron and wood furniture cushions are 2-3" thick, aluminum furniture cushions are 3-5" thick, and PVC furniture cushions are 4-5" thick.

  3. Measure the depth of the seat from back the of the seat to the front (preferably at the middle).
  4. Measure the back of furniture from the top to the seat.
  5. Measure the top of the back from point to point.

Aluminum Slat Furniture

Aluminum slat furniture does not usually come in a tapered seat model, yet there are some manufacturers that offer that option.  For the most part, seats and backs are basically rectangular in shape with rounded corners. Follow these steps to get the best measurement possible.
Note - All measurements should be between the arms of the chair.

  1. Measure the width of the chair at the top from point to point.
  2. Measure the length of the back from the top of the chair the the seat of the chair.
  3. Measure the length of the seat from the back to the front.
  4. Add the the length of the back and the seat for an overall length.
